Day 104: Galle

Day 104: Galle.

Making the short jaunt from Unawatuna, we arrived in the atmospheric old fort town of Galle. A key trading hub during Portuguese, Dutch and British rule, Galle has managed to retain much of its colonial charm, complete with fortified walls, burnt red terracotta roofs and an iconic old lighthouse.

Seizing a perfect sunny day we decided to rent a motorbike to explore the south coast on our own steam. Passing stilt fishermen, visiting a herbal spice garden (with surprise complimentary massages and a boat trip), enjoying untouched beaches and finishing it all off with lunch beside the sweet looking plane.

Day 101: Jungle Beach

Day 101: Jungle Beach.

Foregoing the ‘organised’ snorkelling trip to Jungle Beach, we decided to self-cater, taking the winding jungle path to the pristine, isolated beach. While most of the coral was damaged in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, we did see loads of colourful fish and a large Komodo Dragon style lizard on the journey there.
